A Week in the “Clubhouse”

A perfect app for socializing in a pandemic

Whew — I had to take a couple days off of “Clubhouse” to decide what I wanted it to be for me. As an extrovert, I noticed it was surprisingly draining. Well, “Clubhouse” isn’t draining; some of the people on it are energy sucks. I had to escape from that quickly and reassess. But that’s every social media platform. You have to figure out how to construct an experience that speaks to you rather than pulls from you.

I was invited to “Clubhouse” on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, by a brother who is in a Black men’s mental health group with me. Once I got logged in, he started a “Welcome Room” for me, and we had a small chat of about 5 people. It was an excellent conversation about our professions and some current events such as criminal justice reform, the pandemic, healthcare equity, Dave Chappelle, and the presidential election.

For those of you who have no clue what I’m talking about — “Clubhouse is a space for casual, drop-in audio conversations.” See here (https://twitter.com/joinclubhouse)

How I would describe it — there are rooms about different topics you can hop in and out of to listen and learn, or you can contribute to the conversation.
